Fixr's vinyl fence guide puts most vinyl fences at $15 to $40 a linear foot installed. Its typical job, 209 feet of white vinyl privacy fence around a quarter acre yard, comes to about $5,800. Its low example is $3,000 for 209 feet of 3 foot vinyl picket, and its high one $16,000 for 418 feet of 6 foot black vinyl privacy fence around half an acre.

What a whole vinyl fence costs

LengthInstalled (Fixr)
50 feet$750 to $2,000
100 feet$1,500 to $4,000
150 feet$2,250 to $6,000
200 feet$3,000 to $8,000
300 feet$4,500 to $12,000

Fixr's overall range for a vinyl fence is $4,000 to $7,300. Gates, taking out an old fence and a permit are extra; they are covered below.

By height

Most vinyl fences are about 6 feet tall. Taller fences cost more per foot:

HeightInstalled per linear foot (Fixr)
4 feet$15 to $25
6 feet$15 to $40
8 feet$30 to $45
10 feet$35 to $50
12 feet$40 to $60

Fixr prices vinyl up to 12 feet, but none of the cities we cover lets a home fence go that high without a permit or variance; most stop at 6 to 8 feet.

HomeAdvisor's numbers run higher for privacy fences: $15 to $40 a foot for most 4 to 6 foot vinyl fences, and $25 to $60 a foot for a standard 6 foot vinyl privacy fence. We show both because the two guides don't agree. Check your city's height limit before you pick one; the height and permit guide lists the rules for each city we cover.

By style

StyleInstalled per linear foot (Fixr)
Split rail (ranch rail)$11 to $18
Picket$15 to $35
Privacy$15 to $40
Lattice top$18 to $45
Shadowbox$18 to $45

Fixr says a single panel runs from about $70 for a basic white privacy panel to $500 for a designer black one, which is why color and pattern move the price so much.

Labor, gates and the old fence

  • Labor: Fixr puts installation labor at $5 to $10 a linear foot.
  • Gates: Fixr says a gate in a vinyl fence runs $200 to $2,200 installed, depending on width and whether it swings, slides or opens on its own.
  • Taking out the old fence: $2 to $5 a linear foot by Fixr, depending on what it is made of.

How long it lasts

The guides disagree. Fixr says a properly installed PVC fence lasts 10 to 20 years. HomeAdvisor's vinyl guide says to expect to replace or upgrade every 15 to 20 years, while its main fence guide says vinyl holds up for 20 to 30. Ask the installer what the panel warranty covers, for how long, and whether the maker or the installer stands behind it.

Repairs

Fixr puts a vinyl fence repair at $200 to $700. Fence repair costs.

City rules that change a vinyl fence

A vinyl privacy fence is solid, and several cities set different limits for solid and open fences. A few examples from our city pages, each with its source there:

  • Orlando: plastic or vinyl fences are not allowed in historic districts.
  • Denver: vinyl is not on the zoning code's list of fence materials, though the Zoning Administrator can approve other materials of similar quality and durability.
  • Chicago: in the front setback, a fence more than 20 percent solid stops at 54 inches.
  • Raleigh: along a street, the part of a fence above 4 feet can be no more than half solid.
  • Louisville: a solid fence in the required side and rear yards can reach 8 feet, where an open one stops at 6.
