What a whole fence costs
Fixr puts the national average at $3,000 to $7,000. Its low end is about $2,000 for 200 feet of 3 foot galvanized chain link. Its high end is about $9,000 for 200 feet of 6 foot black wrought iron with a gate.
The extras
- Gates. A walk gate runs $50 to $400 installed, a driveway gate $1,000 to $6,000.
- Taking out the old fence. $2 to $5 a linear foot by Fixr, $3 to $5 by HomeAdvisor. Fixr's main guide puts it at $600 to $800 for most fences of 100 to 200 feet.
- Permit. HomeAdvisor says building permits for a fence cost $20 to $60, and its wood fence guide gives $100 to $500 depending on local rules. Your city's fee is the one that counts; the city pages here list the rules we could source.
- Survey. If you don't know exactly where your line is, a land survey runs $400 to $1,000 by Fixr, or $200 to $545 by HomeAdvisor.
- Height. HomeAdvisor says going to an 8 foot fence can add 25% to 35% to the cost.
Labor
Fixr puts labor at $5 to $20 a linear foot for most fence types, and $40 to $150 to set a single post.
