What a deck costs
Fixr deck building costs (updated January 2023) puts the cost to build a deck at $9,000 to $20,000, with a national average of $14,000. Size and material drive most of the difference.

A permit adds roughly $100 to $500 by the same source, depending on the area. These are national figures, last updated by Fixr in January 2023, not a local price survey.
Before you sign
Each city we cover requires a permit for many decks, so ask who will pull it; Wichita's building department calls it a red flag when a contractor asks the homeowner to. Ask each builder for a drawing with the footing depth and how the deck attaches to the house, and compare bids line by line with the bid comparison worksheet.
