Prepare for your fence installation project

Work through this checklist before hiring anyone. It covers fence installation scope and safeguards that can prevent misunderstandings.

Private and independent: The checklist works in your browser. Your selections are not submitted or saved and no contractor is contacted.

Important: Regulations, insurance obligations and permits vary by location. Check the relevant authority and consult an appropriately qualified professional rather than relying on a generic list.

• Linear feet, height and materials specified
• Gates, posts and hardware included
• Property line and permit responsibility
• Utility marking and excavation details
• Removal and cleanup of old fence
• Confirm the business legal name and a working contact method
• Ask what credentials, registrations or permits apply and confirm with the relevant authority
• Request insurance documentation directly from the insurer when coverage matters
• Get work scope, exclusions, timeline and payment schedule in writing
• Document property protection and responsibility for site cleanup
• Clarify change orders, warranty, cancellation and disputes
