A wood privacy fence with a gate

Wood vs Vinyl vs Chain Link vs Aluminum

How the four common fence materials compare on price, upkeep and lifespan, from cost guides, an extension service and the makers themselves.

Price per foot is only half the decision. The other half is how much work the fence needs and how long it lasts.

MaterialInstalled per foot (Fixr)Upkeep
Wood$15 to $35Regular sanding, painting or staining, and sealing
Vinyl$15 to $40Soap and water
Chain link$12.25 to $40An occasional wash
Aluminum$15 to $40Touch-up paint for scratches

Wood

Wood ages with the weather. The posts matter most for how long the frame stands: a University of Kentucky extension specialist writes that properly treated and installed pine posts can last 20 to 35 years, against 3 to 7 years for untreated pine. Master Halco says a western red cedar fence can last 20 years or longer depending on conditions. What makes a wood fence last.

Vinyl

Catalyst, which makes vinyl and aluminum fence, says its vinyl doesn't need painting or staining and usually just needs soap and water. It isn't maintenance-free: CertainTeed notes vinyl still gets dirty outdoors, can build up chalk on the surface, and can get mildew in some areas. Rigid vinyl can also melt or burn near a strong flame or heat source, so keep the grill away from it.

Chain link

Master Halco says chain link needs no staining, painting or sealing, only an occasional wash, and that its fabric is galvanized with a zinc coating to resist corrosion. It keeps the view open. If you want privacy, PVC slats can be woven into the fabric.

Aluminum

Catalyst says aluminum fencing doesn't rust. It can get scratches and dings, which the company handles with matching touch-up paint.

About warranties

Manufacturer warranties differ by brand; Master Halco's colored chain link carries a 15 year limited product warranty, for example. As Catalyst's own FAQ puts it, a warranty is only as good as the company behind it. Ask who honors it: the maker or the installer.
